About Me
Qualified, Not Just Native
Speaking a language and teaching it are two very different things. I have a Master's in Education from the University of Vienna, a degree from Moscow State Linguistic University, and a CELTA certificate. Why I built Mishka
A companion app for learning Russian, now on iOS and Android
Mishka is designed so that you do not have to repeat "I eat bread" 10 times before being allowed to move to the next level. When I was learning German myself, I was most motivated by resources where I could choose topics that genuinely interested me instead of being forced to follow a rigid path that slowed down my progress.
At the same time, structure is extremely important when learning a language, and Mishka is carefully organized with that in mind. All lessons are arranged progressively according to difficulty level and your current stage of learning.
Freedom and Flexibility
By following the structure built into a variety of different activities and lessons, you can choose the speed of your own learning. There is no locked learning path, so students can move freely between topics depending on their interests and needs while still progressing through material that is organized by level and complexity.
Repetition and Memory
Your progress is always saved in the app, so you never lose your learning history. You can save words you want to learn, revisit lessons, and track gaps in your grammar knowledge. Mishka will redirect you to the appropriate grammar lessons whenever needed, and you can specifically practice conjugation and declension, one of the biggest challenges of the Russian language. This kind of repetition is essential because the brain needs repeated exposure for new material to truly stick to your memory.
Context and Associations
The main goal of Mishka is to help students learn Russian through context. Whether you are reading a story, studying culture, learning slang, or exploring idioms, you are always learning the language in context. Flashcards alone are usually not enough if words are learned in isolation. It is important to encounter vocabulary naturally in context and then return to it again later. This is how the brain creates strong associations and long-term memory connections, which has a powerful effect on language development and communication skills.

At the same time, I am not saying that everyone should rely only on an app. Some students need the clear guidance and structure that a teacher provides, and I say this as a teacher myself: I teach lessons and understand that an app is not a complete replacement for real classes.
